Dog Breeds Differ in the Same Ways and For the Same Genetic Reasons as Human Races

Canine Research Lends Insights into the Evolution of the Human Mind

Erin Hecht, who joined the [Harvard] faculty in January, has published her first paper on our canine comrades in the Journal of Neuroscience, finding that different breeds [of dogs] have different brain organizations owing to human cultivation of specific traits. Using MRI scans from 63 dogs of 33 breeds, Hecht found neuroanatomical features correlating to different behaviors such as hunting, guarding, herding, and companionship. Sight hunting and retrieving, for example, were both tied to a network that included regions involved in vision, eye movement, and spatial navigation...

“It was weird to be doing this back in 2012. When I told people, some would say, ‘Oh that’s cute,’” she said. “It took a long time to convince other scientists and funding agencies that dogs could really tell us something about brain evolution.”...

Hecht said she and her collaborators were able see that the breed differences weren’t randomly distributed, but were, in fact, focused in certain parts of the brain. They examined variability, pinpointing six networks of the brain where anatomy correlated with types of processing important for different breeds: reward, olfaction, eye movement, social action and higher cognition, fear and anxiety, and scent processing and vision.

There were some surprises. For example, skill in hunting by scent was not associated with the anatomy of the olfactory bulb. “Rather, this skill was linked to higher-order regions that are involved in more complex aspects of scent processing,” she said. “It’s not about having a brain that can detect if the scent is there. It’s about having the neural machinery to decide what to do with that information.”
Hecht’s lab also studies brain evolution in humans, but she said continuing the dog research provides a window into understanding the human mind.

Because Professor Hecht's research has obvious implications for race realism I am pleasantly surprised that she was hired by Harvard, and that Harvard is financing her research.

Just as the intentional human breeding of dogs has led to breeds with different inclinations and abilities, so have different social environments led to different races with different inclinations and abilities.

It is easy to prove with several key strokes and clicks of the mouse that the different races differ significantly in average intelligence, criminal, and sexual behavior. Unfortunately, it is safe to pretend that these differences are not intrinsic, and safest not to mention them at all.

In his essay "The Roman State and Genetic Pacification," Peter Frost argued that the high rate of capital punishment during the Roman Empire lowered the crime rate by removing those with genetic inclinations toward crime from the breeding population of the Empire.

In their essay "Western Europe, State Formation, and Genetic Pacification" Peter Frost and Professor Henry C. Harpending argue that the frequency of executions in England from roughly 1200 to 1800 had the same effect on the English population.

Professor J. Philippe Rushton deserves to be called "the dean of race realism." In the abridgment of his book Race, Evolution and Behavior he wrote:

"On average, Orientals are slower to mature, less fertile, less sexually active, less aggressive, and have larger brains and higher IQ scores. Blacks are at the other pole. Whites fall in the middle, but closer to Orientals than to Blacks...

"Race differences start in the womb. Blacks are born earlier and grow quicker than Whites and Orientals. The three-way race pattern occurs in milestones such as sexual maturity, family stability, crime rates, and population growth.

"Race differences exist in sexual behavior. The races differ in how often they like to have sexual intercourse. This affects rates of sexually transmitted diseases. On all the counts, Orientals are the least sexually active, Blacks the most, and Whites are in between...

"IQ tests measure intelligence and predict real life success. The races differ in brain size and on IQ tests. On average Orientals have the largest brains and highest IQs. Blacks average the lowest, and Whites fall in between. The brain size differences explain the IQ differences both within groups and between groups."

All of this is obviously true and easy to document. Unfortunately, Professor Rushton was persecuted for telling the truth. There were efforts to fire him from his university position at the University of Western Ontario, even though he had tenure.

Gradually the scientific evidence in favor of what has been called "scientific racism" is accumulating, despite efforts to suppress it. This scientific evidence has obvious political implications. Unfortunately, race remains an area where the more one is willing to ignore the findings of science, the more enlightened one is said to be.

I am sorry that Professor Rushton did not live long enough to be fully vindicated. I hope Charles Murray lives that long.
