Saturday Night at the Movies at Raceology: The Mark of Zorro (1920) starring Douglas Fairbanks
Posted by Independent Thinker, Raceology
Douglas Fairbanks is one of my favorite actors. He and his wife Mary Pickford were Hollywood's first "it couple" they became Hollywood royalty, and Fairbanks was known as the King of Hollywood in the silent era. This is one of the few Fairbanks films I hadn't watched as I'm not overly fond of Zorro, but his other films including The Three Musketeers, The Black Pirate, and the Thief of Bagdad are regarded as some of his best. Little did I know that this film had an influence on Batman, and perhaps in a way was a pre-cursor to the superhero genre, or at least an inspiration?
In the DC Batman continuity, the night before Bruce Wayne's parents were shot they and the young Bruce went to watch either this movie, or its re-make in the 1940s. Once again Zorro protects the weak from abuse by the Spanish wealthy landowners, he protects the peons, who are typically natives, and priests. Here Fairbanks can be seen in all of his swashbuckling glory.
