Conversations with Harold Channer: Rabbi Mayer Schiller Air date: 03-01-99
A controversial New York Rabbi, Rabbi Mayer Schiller joins Harold Channer for an intellectual discussion of Jewish Orthodoxy vs. Reform, the differences, and science and technology vs religion in recent time. The problems of religious outlook, also discusses Islamic terrorism and how it relates to religious fundamentalism. Mayer Schiller also discusses how Western civilization has moved away from God, and so in a way from happiness, etc., and so on and so forth. Lastly, his position as a Hasidic Jew on the state of Israel. Lots of points to mull over.
The following description about Mayer Schiller can be found on the YouTube video, but I should state that he was the keynote speaker at the first annual American Renaissance conference in 1994.
Rabbi Mayer Schiller is an American Hasid based in Monsey, New York State, who identifies himself as a member of Skver, and serves as spokesperson for the Skver community in New Square. Schiller also maintains active ties to the Modern Orthodox community, and teaches advanced Talmud at Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy of Yeshiva University.[1] where he has been a teacher since 1987. Prior to that Rabbi Schiller taught at YCQ (in Queens, NY). In the arena of political thought, the Rabbi is most noted for his advocation of non-violent racial separatism ensuing most significantly from principles of racial identity and social anti-universalism. He is an outspoken critic of liberal notions of race and the bias against traditional religion in today's media and popular culture. Along those lines, he was a featured speaker at the American Renaissance conference in 1994.[2] He has been associated with various groups including the Third Way (UK) and the Ulster Third Way. He is also the author of two books "The Road Back: A Discovery of Judaism Without Embellishments" and " The (Guilty) Conscience of a Conservative" (the 2nd under the name Craig Schiiler). Here is a clip of him at the 1994 AmRen conference:
I'm not a very religious person and there is much I disagree with in this video, but really there is too much to comment on. One of the things I'd say though is it seems to idealistic a conversation, disregarding the harshness of human existence in general, and man's nature which constantly finds him for one reason or another in conflict and suffering (I'm saying this in a basic way without writing out pages to explain what I mean).
