Black Social Pathology and the Enduring White Liberal Guilt Complex

I have difficulty understanding the durability of the white liberal guilt complex. Why are so many whites still willing to forgive blacks for the problems they create for us, and to ignore the responsibility blacks have for their own problems?. The civil right legislation was passed during the 1960's. Beginning in that decade, trillions of tax money, mainly taxed from whites, have been spent on anti poverty programs designed to help blacks. Is that not enough? Despite - or because of? - white generosity and pity, black intellectual performance continues at an inferior level. Black rates of crime and illegitimacy have risen. We are not supposed to talk about this. We are not supposed to think about it. Whites who do, risk punishment.

     

This was understandable during and after the Second World War. The revelations of the Holocaust made most white Americans want to believe that racial differences did not matter, or did not exist. Blacks had contributed loyally to the war effort. Millions of whites could not understand why a black, battle scarred combat veteran of the War could not dine in a restaurant that served men who had not been in uniform.

     

It remained understandable during the early civil rights movement, let us say from the Montgomery Bus Boycott that happened from December 5, 1955, to December 20, 1956, to the March on Washington in August 28, 1963. Civil rights demonstrations back then were peaceful. They only demanded rights for Negroes in the South that they already had in the North. Segregationists hurt their own cause by responding violently to peaceful civil rights demonstrations. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader of genius whose "I have a dream speech" is considered by many, including me, to be one of the greatest speeches in the English language.

     

The black ghetto riots that began in Harlem in the summer of 1964 could have ended the sympathy of white liberals for blacks. Nevertheless, the attention of white liberals and whites to the left of liberalism was soon captured by the War in Vietnam. White liberals wanted blacks to be allies in the anti war movement. White radicals foolishly mistook the looting and burning of stores for the beginning of a revolution against capitalism.

     

Any discerning white Democrat should realize that the black ghetto riots turned the United States into a Republican country. Rises in black crime and illegitimacy, and little improvement in black academic performance, have reduced confidence in liberal agendas on many issues.

     

During the 1960's white liberals went out on a limb to help blacks. Blacks cut off the limb. Nevertheless, millions of whites continue to see blacks as unoffending victims of irrational color prejudice and discrimination. This was graphically obvious in the recent responses to the police killing of George Floyd, who was nothing more really than a career criminal, who like so many other black men, did nothing to raise his son.

     

I do not believe in brainwashing. I do not believe in conspiracies. I cannot understand why so many whites continue to make excuses for blacks, to sympathize with them, and to suppress criticism of them.
