Hong Kong is Dead, And What This Means For The Future
China has passed a new national-security law that threatens life in prison for people who that either provoke hatred against Beijing, or disrupt government function. This is a clear violation of mainland China's promise to keep the liberties of Hong Kong until 2047. The law largely seems to have been passed in order to keep people from protesting for independence.
Officers arrested several hundred people recently after protests. Some for offences such as carrying a sign that read "Hong Kong Independence". The law was applied very swiftly and it shows just how quick the "regime" change cam in Hong Kong. The law applies to anyone and anywhere in the world meaning that even people coming through the airport could be arrested, and threatened with life in prison.
The US House of Representatives passed legislation that punished those that hurt the autonomy of the city, and the banks that do business with them. The fear in Hong Kong is that the new law could be used against anyone. Several residents have made plans to leave Hong Kong now that they fear they are in danger.
Anyway long story short Hong Kong will just become another communist run city, always with threat of persecution. It is a shame as Hong Kong or so I'm told is a beautiful and wondrous city. I just didn't have the time or resources to go there last year on my trip to East Asia. This in my opinion shows that China will NOT become democratic in the future. The Beijing government is too smart for that, they have learned from history. They have seen their kinds of governments toppled, and they know what they must do to stay in power, and make and keep China strong.
That Hong Kong was "dead" was kind of obvious with the British handover, but some of us were optimistic that perhaps they would retain autonomy. I think the bigger fear is China's possible future aggression against Taiwan which it views as a run-away province, against which they have threatened to use nuclear force. Taiwan is a great example of a thriving, democratic and progressive nation with a good economy, and a good amount of freedom. If China actually starts a war and gains control of Taiwan, it could also mean it would have even more territorial ambition in the future and that Taiwan for all of its good would basically be ruined which would be a shame.
China will not be shy about its missions to Africa, and South Asia, what it wants is to gain world superpower status, but they will not be as foolish as Western nations in allowing themselves to get displaced by sub-Saharan Africans, South Asians, and Near Easterners.
Due to demographic decline of Europeans in Western nations the power and prosperity of the world will lie in Eastern Europe, as well as and more importantly Northeast Asia. China will become the dominant superpower, it is interesting to know what will happen with its relations with its neighbouring states i.e. Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Either it will learn how to respect its neighbours or it will come out in an all out war, which would be an even more dystopian future for humanity.
