Joanna Moncrieff: The Myth of the Chemical Cure -The Politics of Psychiatric Drug Treatment
A renowned critic of psychiatric drugs, offers an intelligent, and well argued critique of what she calls, the disease centered interpretation of drug action. Namely, that drugs rectify chemical imbalances in the brain and in this way treat mental illnesses. Instead she shows us that the more parsimonious way of looking at the drugs, is via the drug-centered account, which says that all psychiatric drugs are psychoactive substances that are neurotoxic and that have their effects by producing an altered state of consciousness. Dr. Moncrieff particularly brings attention to the harm caused by these drugs, and their lack of specificity, and effectiveness.
It is very funny how the Dean of Pharmacy, Gail just basically lost it and started to panic, telling everyone they need more drugs, pathetic. Dr. Moncrieff is a hero.
